Mackenzie Jenkins, an 11-year-old, was sitting on her porch swing Saturday when she heard frantic barks coming from inside of her neighbor’s home. The house was on fire, with smoke ascending into the sky, and a 6-month-old puppy trapped inside.
The 11-year-old thought quickly and responded by calling 9-1-1 to get firefighters to the Florida home. Upon arrival, the firefighters headed inside to look for Fiona, the puppy that the young girl had described.
Fiona was rescued and brought outside, where she was treated with oxygen. Upon being found, Fiona had been unresponsive, but was able to wake up before the fire was even put out.
The department’s public affairs specialist, Andrea Schuch, said, “That just shows how important Mackenzie’s call was. If she had waited or hadn’t called, Fiona, the dog, wouldn’t have made it (and there would have been more damage to the house).”
Because of her quick thinking and help, Mackenzie Jenkins was awarded a community recognition coin, a token only awarded to people who go above and beyond when helping out.
This story is the perfect example of how every second counts in this kind of situation, and how people should always respond as soon as possible when there is a life in danger.Related Content:
